White-Collar Workers Join Crowd Straining Food Banks
According to an article in Bloomberg Magazine, the portion of college-degree holders in New York who said they had difficulty affording food increased to 30 percent in 2011 from 24 percent in the previous year. In the past year, corporate dismissals have left middle- class and white-collar workers stranded from the job market, causing many to seek public assistance and help from food charities. The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley is a member of Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest). Feeding America sets standards and acquires food donations from national companies for its 200+ member food banks located throughout the country.
Through its relationship with Feeding America, the Food Bank is able to bring millions of pounds of much needed food into the community every year. Also, by working in partnership with other Feeding America food banks throughout the country, the Food Bank is able to play a role in the national response to hunger.
The Food Bank is also a member of the Food Bank Association of New York State. The Association works to end hunger by assisting the food bank network in obtaining more food and funds, fostering public awareness of the food banks’ mission, and creating partnerships to help alleviate hunger in New York State.
